Job Opening: Public Works Technician I – Gas Department
The City of Waynesville is seeking a reliable and safety-focused Public Works Technician I to join the Gas Department. This position plays a critical role in maintaining the integrity, safety, and reliability of the City’s natural gas distribution system.

Status: Full-Time (Benefited)
Location: City of Waynesville Natural Gas Department
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Assist with the installation, maintenance, repair, and replacement of natural gas mains, services, meters, and related infrastructure
Perform leak detection, investigation, and repairs in accordance with state and federal safety regulations
Operate hand tools, power tools, and light-to-heavy equipment used in gas utility operations
Assist with pipeline locating, excavation, backfilling, and restoration of work areas
Respond to gas emergencies, service interruptions, and customer complaints
Participate in on-call rotations and respond within required timeframes
Maintain accurate records, reports, and documentation related to gas system work
Follow all safety procedures, including OSHA and DOT regulations
Work cooperatively with other Public Works divisions and City departments
Maintain a clean and safe work environment
Perform other related duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED
Valid Missouri driver’s license (or ability to obtain)
Ability to perform physical labor in outdoor conditions, including lifting, bending, and working in confined spaces
Ability to work overtime, evenings, weekends, and on-call rotations as required
Ability to pass background checks and pre-employment screenings
Preferred Qualifications
Completion of Energy World Certification Courses (or willingness to obtain)
Welding certification or demonstrated welding experience
Prior experience in natural gas utilities, public works, or construction
Ability to read maps, utility plans, and technical documents
Familiarity with gas safety standards and procedures
Special Requirements
Must reside within 30 minutes of the City of Waynesville to meet on-call response requirements
Must be able to obtain access to Fort Leonard Wood (background screening required)
Must be willing and able to obtain required certifications and training within specified timeframes
Training & Advancement
The City of Waynesville is willing to provide training and certification opportunities for the right candidate
